Pool Surrounds
A pool surround - the coping and pool paving around the water - is the hardest-working hard surface on a property. It takes constant splash-out, pool chemistry, bare feet, furniture and sun, and it has to stay flat and safe through all of it. Most of what separates a surround that still looks right in ten years from one that lifts, stains or turns slippery is decided before a single paver goes down.
This is where our 7-8 years of experience really shows. Pool surrounds have to handle constant water exposure, pool chemicals and heavy foot traffic while still looking sharp. We build coping and paving that is engineered for drainage and finished with a non-slip surface, so the space is safe as well as good looking.
- Non-slip surfaces engineered for wet, high-traffic conditions
- Correct slope and drainage around the pool edge
- Natural stone, travertine or premium paver options
- Backed by 7-8 years of pool-specific experience

Drainage decides everything
Water has to leave the pool edge, not sit on it or run back in. We set falls away from the waterline across the whole surround, and where a surround meets a house wall or a retaining wall we build in a drainage line rather than hoping the fall does all the work. Getting this wrong is what causes the problems people notice years later: white mineral staining where water pools and evaporates, movement where water gets under the bedding, and slippery patches that never fully dry.
Non-slip is a specification, not a finish
Wet bare feet on a hard surface is the highest-risk surface on a residential property, and slip resistance is measured and rated rather than eyeballed. We select materials with a slip rating suited to a pool edge and lay them so the surface texture is consistent across the whole area. Honed travertine, flamed granite, tumbled natural stone and textured pavers all behave differently underfoot when wet, and the right answer depends on how much sun the area gets and whether it doubles as an entertaining space.
Pool coping, and how the edge is finished
The coping is the piece everyone touches and the piece that dates a pool fastest. Bullnose, square-edge and drop-face coping each suit different pool shells and different looks, and the join between coping and surround has to allow for movement without opening into a gap. We cut and set coping so the line stays true around curves and the overhang is consistent, because an uneven coping line is visible from every angle for the life of the pool.
Working around a pool that already exists
Most of this work happens around a functioning pool rather than a new build. That means protecting the shell and the waterline during demolition, keeping the equipment and plumbing accessible, and sequencing so the pool is usable again as quickly as possible. Salt chlorinated pools are harder on stone and grout than they were a decade ago, and material choice has to account for it.
Where we do pool surrounds
Across the Central Coast, Lake Macquarie and Newcastle.
Pool Surrounds, answered.
Can you replace a pool surround without emptying the pool?
In most cases yes. The pool stays full and we protect the waterline and shell while the old surround comes up. Emptying is only necessary where the coping is being replaced in a way that exposes the shell edge, and we would tell you before starting if that applies.
What is the best pool paving for a saltwater pool?
Salt is harder on porous stone and on grout than fresh chlorinated water. Dense materials such as granite and quality porcelain handle it best with the least maintenance. Travertine and sandstone still work well and are common around Central Coast pools, but they benefit from sealing and will want resealing periodically.
How long does a pool surround take?
A straightforward surround is usually around one to two weeks on site depending on size, access and whether there is demolition of an existing surface first. Curing and weather both affect it. We give a realistic window at quote rather than an optimistic one.
Do you handle the pool fencing as well?
Yes. We do glass, aluminium and Colorbond pool fencing, and doing the fencing and the surround together means the post fixings and the paving are planned around each other rather than one being retrofitted into the other.
